Convection Oven vs Microwave Oven

Kitchen appliances were invented to ease people work in the kitchen. Whether for cooking food, heating up food, making food from scratch, keeping the food fresh and many other useful purposes. When choosing oven we can choose from a lot of varieties, there is conventional oven, convection oven, microwave oven, and toaster oven. We can choose which one we want to buy, by considering the purpose of those appliances. Some of them is convection oven and microwave oven. A lot of us may already owning them in our kitchen, but how are them different. Here is some information about convection oven and microwave oven.

Convection Oven
Convection oven was first invented by Maxson Whirlwind in 1945. Convection oven is an oven which use air circulation, to regulate the hot air inside the cooking chamber. The hot air inside the cooking chamber was forced to move around food to make sure the food is cook through. The convection oven is claimed to be able to cook food faster compare to regular oven or conventional oven. Even though convection used a lower heat, this oven also claimed to make food tastier, such as the meat becomes juicier. The design of convection oven consist of a fan and heating elements which built around it, providing the heat. Some convection oven have a radiant heat source placed in the top and the bottom of the oven, this feature gives improvement in the heat transfer and speeds up the cooking time. On the other hand some convection oven have the heating elements placed in an outside enclosure and are hidden from the food. This may result on the reduction of the radiant heat on the food, however in convection oven the hot air is still circulated inside the cooking chamber, and even though the temperature is much lower than the radiance heat source it is still hot enough to be able to cook food. When choosing to buy convection oven, keep in mind about what fuel it work with, if you choose to buy the gas model because you already have gas installed in your home you will still need electricity to run the fan. You also have to prepare the needed space to install them, at least 1” in each side of the appliance. If you don’t have enough space, there is a half size convection oven you can opt to. Microwave Oven
Microwave oven or people called it shortly as microwave is one of kitchen appliance which is used to heat up food by exposing it to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range. Electromagnetic radiation induces polar molecules in the food to rotate and produce thermal energy along the process called dielectric heating. Microwave might be first discovered by Dr. Percy Spencer in 1946. At that time he was working with Raytheon Corporation on a radar related project. When he was testing a magnetron, he noticed that the candy inside his pocket was melted. This strange phenomena made Dr. Spencer made another experiment. In the second experiment he was testing some popcorn by placing them near the magnetron tube and he was surprised when the popcorn crack and sputtered. In the further experiments it was revealed that microwave ovens can effectively increase the inside temperature of various foods quite faster than traditional oven. The first microwave oven was marketed by Raytheon in 1954, it was called 1161 Radarange. This oven was very huge and cost pretty expensive for about $5000 per item, which is why this oven was only used for commercial purposes such as institutions and restaurants. The first microwave magnetron tube also need to be cooled down after use, which also is required proper plumbing installations. The new era of microwave was started in 1967. Amana marketed its first domestic Radarange countertop microwave oven, which is smaller, safer, and affordable it was sold for $500 per item. In the following years the sales are not quite good but not long after that a lot of other companies also starting to produce them.

Convection OvenMicrowave Oven
- The size is bigger than microwave- The size is far smaller
- Have fans inside- Do not have fans inside
- Works by using gas or electricity to flare the heater - Works by using electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency to heat up and cook food
- Is pricier than microwave oven- Is cheaper than convection oven

Conclusion
The difference between both of them lays on how they heat up food. Some people said microwave is not exactly an oven and they are fall into the kitchen appliance that can heat up food. Convection oven is traditionally an oven, which use fan built in the inside to regulate hot air in the cooking chamber while microwave use radiation to heats water and other polarized molecules within the food placed inside the appliance. Microwaves is able to heat up food thoroughly without actually cooking them. From the appearance side, oven is usually larger while microwave are far smaller. The main function are also different, people commonly use oven to cook food, while microwave used to heat up food. From the price side also oven is pricier than microwave.
